Behind the Scenes of Startup Growth – How Connections Drive Startup Growth

I recently attended an Oxford Innovation event, talking with business support leaders from 32 innovation centres across the UK. You might think we'd mostly discuss products, marketing strategies, or funding—but the biggest takeaway was actually much simpler: startups succeed or fail based on their connections.

And by connections, I don’t just mean hundreds of LinkedIn contacts. I’m talking about meaningful, strategic relationships that truly move your business forward.

Why Connections Actually Matter

When I talk about the importance of connections, it’s deeper than the usual networking tips.

I’ve seen startups with genuinely impressive ideas or technology struggle endlessly—until a single key introduction suddenly changes everything. A colleague at the event put it well:

“Most founders underestimate how important relationships are. You can spend years working hard, or the right connection can speed things up dramatically.”

I invest a lot of time building these relationships, so founders don't have to. When they collaborate with me, they're not just getting advice—they’re directly accessing people who can help them grow faster.

How This Works in Practice

Daniel, for example, had a great product but struggled to attract investors. The issue wasn’t his product; it was how he communicated its value. Here's what we did:

  • Defined a clear, compelling story that resonated strongly with investors.

  • Redesigned his landing page so visitors instantly understood its value.

  • Made direct introductions to relevant angel networks and venture capitalists.

Daniel’s take on this:

“We always had a solid product, but we needed someone who knew exactly how investors think. That changed everything.”

Real progress usually happens behind the scenes—strategic connections, clear messaging, and specific actions.

Practical Ways I Support Founders

  • Investor Introductions – Connecting you directly with relevant people.

  • Traction Strategies – Clear positioning, effective storytelling, and visibility.

  • Expert Insights – Quick access to experienced specialists who’ve faced similar challenges.

Another colleague from the event captured this well:

“Successful founders aren’t trying to do everything themselves—they know when and how to ask the right people for help.”

Insights from the Oxford Event

Here are a few standout points from our discussions:

  • Many startups still struggle to effectively access investor networks. There's funding available, but only if you can reach the right contacts.

  • Storytelling matters—a solid business model or good financials alone won’t attract investors without the right positioning.

  • Founders often underestimate the value of expert advice. You don’t need to have all the answers if you have the right connections.

The event confirmed what I’ve repeatedly observed: successful startups are deeply connected startups.

Final Thought: Don’t Build Alone

If you’re building something important, don’t try to handle everything on your own. Clearly communicate your needs, and ask for help when needed.

If you're stuck or need specific introductions—reach out. The right connections can accelerate your progress significantly.
